Travellers are the painters in HMSHost’s innovative take on art at the airport, which seeks to reduce stress and offer an unusual experience during the Christmas travel season.
HMSHost has launched an airport art project with a twist: it is the travellers themselves who are the painters.
In the Art of Holiday Travel project, the global restaurateur has commissioned local artists to sketch interactive mural paintings reflecting a regional holiday theme at three major US airports. Travellers then pick up paint brushes and spray cans to take the mural in new directions.
This video shows how passengers completed the mural at Miami International Airport.
After the holiday travel season the murals will be donated to local community partners focused on supporting youth in need, HMSHost said.
The project was launched at Miami International Airport, and highlights can be seen in the video and images on this page. Murals have also been placed at Seattle-Tacoma International and Chicago O’Hare International airports.

HMSHost Vice President of Marketing and Communications Atousa Ghoreichi said: “Our focus is on enhancing the travel guest experience while connecting with the local community and the Art of Holiday Travel does just that.
“Studies show creative activity, regardless of artistic talent, lessens stress. With the craziness holiday travel can bring, our interactive mural painting pop-ups [offer] a unique airport experience.”
HMSHost said artists were on-hand to guide and offer tips to travellers as they painted.
As part of the Art of Holiday Travel pop-up events, travellers could enjoy complimentary holiday drinks and sweet treats as they painted. Participants were also offered holiday-themed giveaways, as well as discounts at HMSHost restaurants.
HMSHost is encouraging travellers not present at one the participating airports to share their holiday experiences on social media with the #ArtofHolidayTravel hashtag.
"With the craziness holiday travel can bring, our interactive mural painting pop-ups [offer] a unique airport experience,” said HMSHost.
