At The Trinity Forum – the world’s leading airport commercial revenues conference – in Singapore on 1 November, then China Duty Free Group (CDFG) President (now Vice Chairman) Charles Chen explained how China – and Hainan Island in particular – became travel retail’s ‘lighthouse’ during the pandemic. And he outlined why an even brighter future lies ahead.
Chen said that the closure of international travel in China offered an opportunity for CDFG to adapt its approach to business. “China is changing,” he said. “The outbound tourist flow at China’s airports and border ports dropped sharply, but Chinese tourists began to travel within the country. This inspired me to adapt and change our approach too.”
He assessed the three key dynamics to “restarting the market engine”, namely Big Data, innovation and cooperation between industry partners.
In leveraging shopper insights, mining the data of travellers who visited Hainan, segmenting them into key target groups and launching a CDF Member WeChat Mini Program are among the key initiatives introduced. VIP and high-tech services have been developed to connect with shoppers before, during and after they travel. Under an enhanced cooperation drive, many more brands have gained access to Chinese shoppers across CDFG’s Hainan Island operations.
Chen underlined the impact of these factors in a dazzling presentation about the cdf Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex (see video).
Looking ahead, Chen shared the five new pillars for CDFG’s future development. These are to improve new retail business, build more downtown duty-free stores in China, bid for large airport hubs in domestic and international markets, expand overseas business and strengthen capital operation.
“We can never go back to three years ago. We cannot stop moving forward. We must embrace the future bravely with wisdom and courage,” he said.

In an emotional culmination to The Trinity Forum 2022 in Singapore, Charles Chen was presented with the inaugural Trinity Award for his outstanding contribution to the travel retail industry over a remarkable 35-year career.
Mr Chen was presented with the award by The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie during the Gala Dinner at Jewel Changi Airport hosted by Changi Airport Group.

在2022年11 月 1 日于新加坡举行的世界权威机场商业营收峰会“三一论坛”上,时任中免集团总经理(现任副董事长)陈国强概述了中国,尤其是海南离岛免税市场,在疫情期间迅速崛起,成为旅游零售业“灯塔”的辉煌成就,以及他对于未来的乐观态度。
陈国强说,疫情期间中国对国际旅行的限制为中免集团提供了一个调整战略的良机。 “中国正在经历巨大的变化,”他表示。 “中国机场和边境口岸的出境旅游人数急剧下降,中国游客开始更多地进行国内游。这促使我去寻找新路径,改变我们的经营方式以适应市场变革。”
他还介绍了“重启市场引擎”的三个关键动力:大数据、创新和行业伙伴之间的合作。
中免推出了几项重要举措,来挖掘、利用有关消费者行为的洞察,其中包括收集曾到访过海南的旅客的数据、将他们细分为关键目标群体、推出 cdf会员购微信小程序等。集团还开发了VIP 和高科技服务,以便在旅行前、旅行中、旅行后与旅客进行联系和互动。在深入合作的推动下,更多品牌已通过中免集团的海南业务接触到了广泛中国消费者。
在介绍cdf 海口国际免税城(见视频)时,陈国强进一步强调了这些因素带来的有利影响。
着眼未来,他分享了中免集团今后发展的五个新支柱:改善新的零售业务、在国内增设市区免税店、在国内外市场竞标大型机场的经营权、拓展海外业务,以及加强资本运作。
“我们永远都无法回到三年前的样子,我们不能停止前进。我们必须利用智慧和魄力,勇敢地拥抱未来,”他说。
三一论坛“杰出行业贡献奖”
陈国强在去年举办的新加坡 “三一论坛”期间被授予“杰出行业贡献奖”(Outstanding Industry Contribution),表彰了他在35 年职业生涯中对旅游零售业做出的杰出贡献。
在由樟宜机场集团于星耀樟宜主办的论坛晚宴上,《穆迪达维特免税报告》创始人兼董事长Martin Moodie为他颁发了奖杯。
