The Big Interviews
Talking travel retail
2013 – Pioneer, pathfinder, patriot
One of the great figures of modern-day travel retail, the inheritor of Dr Brendan O‘Regan’s mantle as industry statesman, Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin, opened up in this memorable interview. He talked with passion and poignancy about people and principles as he turned a sprightly 70 years old and the company he set up on behalf of the Dubai government turned 30.
2014 – Marking 25 years of achievement
As King Power International Group celebrated its 25th anniversary in November 2014, Martin Moodie spoke to Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha about the landmark and some of the great moments in the company’s journey of the past quarter century. Tragically, the industry lost one of its greatest figures when Khun Vichai was killed in a helicopter crash close to beloved Leicester City football club’s ground in October 2018.
2014 – On century duty
Spanish beauty-to-fashion house Puig celebrated its 100th anniversary to coincide with the Puig Vela Classica yachting event in Barcelona in July 2014. We took the opportunity to talk to Chairman & CEO Marc Puig about a century of achievement in this open interview about family values.
2016 – “A customer-centric aviation project”
Injecting a human dimension into the travel experience is not always easy, so it was illuminating to hear an airport CEO stress its critical importance. It wasn’t just any airport CEO either: it was Paul Griffiths, CEO of the world’s leading international airport in Dubai. He spoke to us for a special book to mark the opening of Concourse D at Dubai International. “For some people travel can be daunting. We want the airport process – those we cannot eliminate – to be friendly, and to make flying fun again. I love the idea of travel being a human enabler, of reuniting people and bringing whole societies together. Airports have a duty of care to make the whole process enjoyable again.”
A lovely sentiment, beautifully expressed, and one that Griffiths has returned to repeatedly in DXB‘s remarkably strong bounceback from the COVID-19 pandemic.
