2019 IN REVIEW

Blogs of the year

The Moodie Blog was launched in 2008, travel retail’s first (and still only) Blog and since inception one of our most popular features, writes Martin Moodie. In The Moodie Blog, kindly sponsored by Victorinox, I like to get ‘up close and personal in travel retail’ as the tagline has it. I aim to bring a personal flavour – whether it be humorous, poignant or critical – to my experiences. Here are some of my favourites from 2019.

Filipino flair and Chinese spice: Viewing travel retail through a different prism

People often ask me where I see the next big opportunity in travel retail. Which market? Which consumers? Which categories? Three days in the Philippines has helped shape my answers. Except I wouldn’t say ‘next’ opportunity. It’s here. It’s now. It’s happening.

Creating a new kind of ATV at Hong Kong Airport

“Of course. Come in.” He had the smile of a man who knew his ATV (average trim value) was about to soar.

The young man and the sea: How a Kiwi created transatlantic history

After a 70 day, 19 hours and 37 minutes journey from the Canary Islands, a young Kiwi makes land in Antigua. Never has The Moodie Davitt Report been prouder to sponsor a fund-raising project.

Discovering the raisin at the end of a Reykjavik sausage

“Do you think my flight will take off in this weather?” I asked the taxi driver. “Þetta reddast!” shot back the reply.

Christchurch terrorist attacks: A statement from The Moodie Davitt Report Founder and Chairman Martin Moodie

Today I and my team stand as one in mourning for those lost or injured in Christchurch and in support of their families and indeed of the Muslim world.

How generations four and five are flourishing at Heinemann

The fifth generation will no doubt serve Heinemann proud. Meanwhile, the fourth is not only going strong but, I am delighted to say, getting stronger.

CDF-Sunrise Duty Free lays down an important beauty marker

Each of the boutiques enjoys the same space; each opens to its neighbours; each is complementary to the others in quality, positioning and retail execution.

Remembering Mount Difficulty and those it has claimed

Cancer is not only a bully but an undiscerning one. There is nothing fair about its choices nor its impact. Its treatment can often be as harsh as the disease itself. It takes too many, too soon, too horribly.

Cliffs, (Dermot) divots and sand traps on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way

Take a listen to my on-course podcast with Sunil – it may change your view of golf broadcasting forever.

A lament for VG Siddhartha

None of us know, can even begin to comprehend, the pressures or despair which drove that person to a decision so blithely dismissed as cowardly and yet one that requires the ultimate courage.

Catching up with Severino Pušić, travel retail’s low-profile high achiever

Severino is a charismatic but distinctly low-key man. His word is his bond and he believes passionately in his principles, in his company and in his people.

Discovering 'the bouquet that pervades across China'

As I step onto my hotel balcony, the view is as intoxicating as the Moutai aroma that fills the air. Down below me, the beautiful Chishui River (‘the beautiful liquor river’) flows serenely through the town as it has for centuries, its pure waters integral to the classic Chinese baiju spirit made nearby.

A chapter closes in Cannes but a new plot begins in Auckland

This must rank as my favourite moment of any Cannes show over the past 31 years, the most thoughtful and touching of gestures and one that made me redouble my vows to do more to help preserve our planet.

Discovering Penghu, the Pearl of the Taiwan Strait

I’ve tracked the Ever Rich Duty Free store for many years – in 2015 I wrote the company’s 18-year history – and I never fail to be impressed by the group’s commitment to quality, to culture, to sense of place and to society.

How Daxing redefined the power of possibility in the aviation world

Daxing is a modern-day wonder of the world. Not just of the aviation world. Of the world.

Experiencing a Eureka moment at Hamad International

My final trip of the year, and indeed of the decade, is over. And what a great way to close out the 2010s it turned out to be.
