The Moodie Davitt eZine – Celebrating
In these pages we mark the milestone 300th issue of The Moodie Davitt e-Zine with a look back on key editions in the history of a transformative travel retail publication, which continues to embrace the power and stretch the boundaries of the digital platform.
Groundbreaking media platform The Moodie Davitt eZine this week reaches a major new milestone: its 300th edition. First launched on 11 August 2011 in a first-of-its-kind for travel retail, since then the publication – originally The Moodie Report e-Zine – has embraced the full multi-media spectrum to offer timely and insightful features, news and columns, presented in a dynamic, highly visual fashion, incorporating videos, podcasts, images and, of course, top-class journalism. In June 2018, the new-look Moodie Davitt eZine – dubbed ‘Travel Retail’s Lookbook’ – made its stunning debut. Our aim in relaunching the eZine was simple – to pioneer a new way of looking at the travel retail industry that embraced the power and potential of the digital platform, bringing images and videos from across the industry thrillingly to life. In these pages we present highlights of the eZine’s journey over the past ten years through some of our most memorable covers and stories. Thank you for being with us on what has been a rewarding and at times thrilling journey to date, and we look forward to stretching the boundaries of our digital communications for many more years.
Memorable and landmark eZine editions 2011-2021
From the very first The Moodie Report eZine set out its manifesto with this captivating launch issue. Featuring the multimedia reportage that quickly become the magazine’s trademark, the cover story was one of the most compelling and moving trade interviews before or since, with Martin Moodie speaking to Fraser Dunlop about the World Duty Free Group executive’s remarkable battle with cancer (which he sadly lost four years later). And it set out many of the foundations of the eZine for years to come – including our focus on industry data in Stock Watch and Traffic Monitor, plus our popular The Front Line series.
Featuring the first reporting and analysis of DFS Group’s impending clean sweep in the core category tenders at Hong Kong International Airport, this issue proved that a digital magazine could bring fresh and timely insight even in the age of Internet news. As we have done before and often since, we beat the competition to the story and even had time for an in-depth and informed consideration of the business implications for the winner and losers. Quality reporting and deep analysis, at pace.
As we have done every year in October, we turned our pages pink in support of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness campaign with a memorable cover shot. The eZine, alongside our other titles, represents an important vehicle for our charitable initiatives and those we support. We also celebrated The Moodie Report’s tenth anniversary ahead of our Charity Ball in Hong Kong.
Our reporting on World Duty Free Group’s clean sweep of AENA’s Spanish airport tenders was a triumph of teamwork. The Moodie Report Vice Chairman Dermot Davitt’s incredible live on-location minute-by-minute reporting on the day of the tender awards was replicated in video format by our multimedia team, while Davitt pushed the story forward with the first post-tender interviews with WDFG and AENA. All the while the e-Zine team was reporting and analysing stories that, in any other week, would have made the front cover – though few covers are as memorable or as creative as this one.
This cover brought a whole new dimension to the industry’s first multimedia magazine. Our first video cover featured World Duty Free Group’s Trinity partnership with Nestlé International Travel Retail, Diageo Global Travel & Middle East and P&G Prestige. It’s an innovation that allowed this huge story to leap out of the front page.
