A 19-year chronology

In the same month as our 300th eZine, The Moodie Davitt Report marks 19 years of serving the travel retail industry. Here we chart some of the defining moments in our story so far.

16 September 2002

The first edition of The Moodie Report is published – with the major focus on the impact of war in Iraq on travel retail. The publication is strictly no-frills, a simple six-page pdf with no advertising or photos but packed with quality content.

12 March 2003

The Moodie Report website is launched, quickly becoming established as an indispensible source of reliable and real-time business intelligence on the global travel retail sector. It now regularly attracts over 500,000 page views a month.

18 June 2003

The first Trinity Forum is held in London, with the aim of re-evaluating the industry model and ensuring greater cooperation between stakeholders. Some 200 senior executives from the global travel retail industry participate in what will come to rank as a seminal event in sector history. Thereafter., the term ‘Trinity’ becomes an integral component of travel retail vocabulary.

October 2003

Our brand is extended to The Moodie Davitt Report Print Edition (now, fully digital, called The Magazine), initially published in a compact Reader’s Digest-type format. It is an immediate critical and commercial success that is now a clear leader in advertising terms.

20 October 2003

The Trinity Forum White Paper, emanating from June’s Trinity Forum, is released, examining the future of the industry model and laying out clear principles for the sector to thrive in the future.

24 September 2006

The Moodie Blog is launched, travel retail’s first such platform. It is still going strong to this day, offering a highly personalised, sometimes poignant, often humourous, and occasionally critical take on our business and its personalities and places.

22 March 2007

The travel retail industry’s first Podcast service is launched. The Moodie Podcast highlights some of the industry’s big issues and stories in a snappy format.

5 October 2007

The company hosts a hugely successful charity fundraising dinner in Hong Kong on behalf of children’s cleft charity The Smile Train.

22 November 2008

The inaugural Miles for Smiles walk/run is held in Dubai to raise funds for cleft charity The Smile Train; the event raises more than US$200,000.

3 February 2010

‘Hand in Hand for Haiti’ is launched to assist the reconstruction of Haiti following the catastrophic January earthquake. An initial collaboration between DFS Group, The Estée Lauder Companies and The Moodie Report becomes the biggest fund-raiser in travel retail history, leading to the building of a world-class school, Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable in the western commune of Saint-Marc.

4-7 March 2011

All over the world runners take part in the first Moodie Multi-National Marathon to raise funds for hand in Hand for Haiti; a second event takes place in June 2012.

January 2011

The first Airport Food & Beverage (FAB) Conference & Awards is held at Manchester Airport in the UK., literally under the nose of Concorde. The most recent edition of the event took place in Dallas in June 2019.

11 August 2011

The first issue of The Moodie Report e-Zine is published, representing a first for travel retail publishing in embracing the full multimedia spectrum. Edition 1 features a poignant and moving interview with World Duty Free’s Fraser Dunlop (now sadly passed) on his long, courageous and at that point successfu battle with cancer. Rest in Peace Fraser.

26 August 2011

Swap the M for an F and hey presto you have The Foodie Report. The new sister title to The Moodie Report is launched with a focus on the eclectic and burgeoning travel-related food & beverage sector.

10 May 2012

The Moodie Report Foundation, a charitable institution dedicated to helping fund cancer research and other cancer-related concerns, is launched.

12 June 2012

The world’s first airport-specific digital, mobile and social media awards – dubbed ‘The Moodies’ – are unveiled. They are designed to champion and reward thought leadership, innovation and consumer interaction and have since become an annual benchmark of industry excellence.

31 August 2012

A new division, Moodie Corporate, is created, dedicated to corporate publications produced for industry clients.

5 October 2012

A charity ball at the Hotel Icon in Hong Kong is held to mark the company’s tenth anniversary. The event raises funds for The Moodie Report Foundation and Hand in Hand for Haiti.

30 September 2015

After a three-year spell under external control due to his battle with cancer, Founder and Chairman Martin Moodie takes back full control of The Moodie Report parent company, Moodie International Ltd, through a new investment vehicle Sixth Continent Intelligence Limited.

1 April 2016

The Moodie Report is rebranded as The Moodie Davitt Report, reflecting Dermot Davitt’s vital contribution to the company and the changes to the ownership of parent company Moodie International.

28 June 2017

The Moodie Davitt Report launches a five-year cancer research fellowship in association with London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, honouring loved ones of the Moodie Davitt team who have been lost to the disease.

30 August 2018

The Moodie Davitt Report formally unveils The Spotlight Series – bespoke, curated e-Zine publications covering airport, store and restaurant openings; key promotional campaigns; and major product launches. The first edition, which appears in August 2018, is dedicated to the Grand Opening of Duty Zero by cdf at Hong Kong International Airport (below left). Pictured right is a recent edition from August 2021, whch portrays a groundbreaking partnership between Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin.

28 February 2019

The Moodie Davitt Report launches a new monthly enewsletter series that offers a curated selection of stories focused on key categories in travel retail and beyond. The new platform kicks off with Sunglasses Curated, in association with eyewear leader Luxottica.

Other curated titles follow, and the series has now grown to include Confectionery Curated in partnership with Mondelez World Travel Retail; Beauty Curated, supported by Shiseido Travel Retail; Hainan Curated, in association with Foreo; Wellbeing Curated with Rituals; Lifestyle Curated in partnership with Victorinox; Airport Consumer Experience, in association with Airport Dimensions; Wine Curated with Masi Agricola; Design Curated with ALTAVIA Travel Retail and Sustainability Curated with L’OCCITANE Group.

11 May 2019

The global travel retail industry turns out in force to support Southeast Asian children’s charity Friends-International at The Moodie Davitt Report Duty Calls Charity Dinner in Singapore. A sell-out audience of over 300 guests gathers at the newly opened Jewel Changi Airport to support the event, raising over US$260,000.

12-16 October 2020

The Moodie Davitt Report and partner FILTR.QINGWA open the doors to the inaugural Virtual Travel Retail Expo, a pioneering virtual digital show and symposium that brings the travel retail industry together in a year when collaboration and partnership were most needed. The eagerly awaited follow-up event takes place on 11-15 October 2021.

This year’s Expo, housed on a new and improved digital platform, promises to be a diverse and enriching online experience, complete with Exhibition Pavilion, Knowledge Hub (Symposium and Workshops) and Experience Arena (Showcase platform), as well as specialist zones Hainan Discovery, Cruise Jetty and Retailer Emporium.

December 2020

The Moodie Davitt Report creates Moodie Davitt Asia, a new Hong Kong-based operational headquarters led by Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie. The move underlines the company’s deep commitment to the industry’s vital growth markets of the future, led by China, as it becomes the first travel retail media organisation with an Asian base.

4 March 2021

The Moodie Davitt Report launches its WeChat Official Account, delivering weekly updates in the Chinese language on the duty free and travel retail world in China and beyond. The account has grown rapidly and become an influential voice and much-followed platform among Chinese travel retail industry decision makers.

5-9 April 2021

In a pioneering step prompted by the COVID-driven inability to hold a physical event in Orlando, the Summit of the Americas is held virtually for the first time, co-organised by IAADFS, ASUTIL and The Moodie Davitt Report.

12-15 April 2021

The Moodie Davitt Report and BW Confidential jointly host Beauty Tech Live, another pioneering virtual event that brings together the fast-merging worlds of beauty and technology.

18 May 2021

The Moodie Davitt Report releases a new video podcast series called TRI-POD, in association with The SEVA Group. Each edition features a different guest chatting not just about the travel retail industry but also their own lives, likes and inspirations.
