Timeline of a Turkish pioneer

Setur, a Koç Holding company, begins to operate in the duty free retail sector. After its first store opens, the company seizes further opportunities in the sector in the years that follow. The business expands to diplomats through the company’s bond store merchandising licence; to transit and foreign-bound vessels with its ship store merchandising licence; and to airlines through an inflight sales merchandising licence.

Setur Duty Free begins serving the needs of Turkish citizens living abroad for a minimum of two years. This status is underpinned by an exempted household appliances merchandising licence in Ankara and Istanbul.

The company commences inflight sales onboard Bosphorus Airlines, later partnering with other airlines.

Setur Duty Free wins the competitive tender to manage inflight sales for Turkish Airlines, a partnership that runs to 2014.

Setur Duty Free is appointed supplier to the NATO duty free store located at the organisation’s Izmir headquarters.

Stores at Kuşadası and Çeşme seaports came into operation, having been privatised in 2003.

Habur and Cilvegözü land border stores are privatised with Setur Duty Free managing operations.

The Kapıkule land border store – the largest in the Setur Duty Free network – opens on the Turkey/Bulgaria crossing.

A big year for the company. In June, the store at Kapıkule is relocated to a new commercial building. Setur Duty Free also opens stores at Bodrum seaport and the Sarp land border cross with Georgia.

The Erbil diplomatic duty free shop opens in May.

The Yalıkavak marina store is relocated and reopened, following renovation of the famed marina on Turkey’s Bodrum Peninsula.

Expansion continues as the Iğdır Dilucu and Ardahan Çıldır- Aktaş land border stores are opened.

The Hakkâri-Esendere land border stores on the crossing to Iran opens.

Another big year, highlighted by a stylish renovation of the Sarp land border operation in line with a wider upgrade of the site. New stores begin operation at the Van Kapıköy and Ardahan Türkgözu land borders, while the Seferihisar seaport store in İzmir Province is also inaugurated.

Investment continues across the company’s extensive land border store portfolio, with commercial and passenger shops opened at the Hamzabeyli crossing in April and June. As with the key crossing at Kapıkule, these stores are located in Edirne Province on the frontier with Bulgaria.
