A MODERN TAKE ON MASCULINE SCENTS
“Innovative, addictive, intense, contrasted, masculine,” are the words used by Master Perfumers Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm to describe their joint creation, Prada Luna Rossa Ocean.
In looking for new ways to break traditional perfumery codes, Flipo and Benaïm put their creative minds together for the new eau de toilette – developing “a modern take on masculine scents” that is both powerful and intimate.
The Moodie Davitt Report: Prada is known for boundary-breaking in scent, what was your brief?
Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm: The initial brief of the brand was to create a modern take on masculine scents power but also more intimate, uplifting and somewhat comforting. Men combining physical and intellectual strength, driven by mastering technology to push limits and open new horizons.
We wanted to address these strong-willed men by mixing naturalness and technology in a bottle.
How would you describe Prada Luna Rossa Ocean? Prada Luna Rossa is a cutting-edge fragrance based on an iconic fougere structure. This structure is here reinvented by a sophisticated orris cream wrapped in the eccentric blue vibes of an aromatic blend.
What are the main accords of this fragrance? To make this fragrance distinguished, this scent is composed of a suave and velvety iris/safran accord, evoking the soft warmth of leather. To this, we added the woody and smoky vetiver accord that reinforces the contemporary character of the trail and all the masculinity that emanates from it.
What is the olfactive signature of Luna Rossa Ocean? The olfactive signature of Prada Luna Rossa Ocean is truly unique: intensely fresh and contrasted by a sensual and addictive trail, to reinvent the codes of modern masculinity with a luxurious orris cream and a sensual vegetal leathery note.

Let’s chat about the molecular technology used to create Luna Rossa Ocean. Why did you use this particular technology for this fragrance?
To create Prada Luna Rossa Ocean, we have used molecular distillation. This innovative technology allows us to obtain a tailor-made natural ingredient, with the vetiver for example.
After a traditional extraction of the raw material, the resulting product is broken down by molecular distillation. We then identify the ideal facets of the ingredient for the fragrance. The ingredient is then recomposed, purified of all unwanted inflections.
The purification of the ingredient expands our palette and gives us the ability to chisel an ingredient in an ultra-precise way. We play with the cursors of its performance and olfactory profile to infuse the fragrance with bold and innovative facets
The resulting ingredient is called ‘Heart’ and offers a unique olfactory profile. A profile reworked through molecular distillation which offers a new perspective of a natural ingredient.
We used this technology for Prada because we thought it was the perfect fit for the brand since craftsmanship & excellence are amongst its core values.
As per the fragrance inspiration, were there any technologies used that augmented possibilities and opened new horizons?
In the conception of Prada Luna Rossa Ocean, new technologies have obviously increased the field of possibilities to create an exceptional juice that breaks the codes of modern perfumery.
As previously explained, for this fragrance we used the technology of hearts, which allows us to obtain a natural ingredient tailored through molecular distillation. We have therefore custom-designed for Prada a vetiver, as well as an artemisia and a clary sage to awaken the bold and innovative facets of the fragrance and to offer a pioneering neo-fern with vibrant contrasts.
