ARTISTIC COLLABORATION

WOMEN BAUHAUS COLLECTIVE

La Prairie is celebrating the launch with its own ‘Women Bauhaus Collective’, a project through which five young female artists reinterpret their individual creative Pursuit of Harmony through digital artworks.

The Bauhaus movement is a major architecture movement that has been a powerful source of inspiration for La Prairie over the years.

The women of Bauhaus were true pioneers. They paved the way for other women who aspired to enter the world of art and architecture and also helped the Bauhaus movement reach new heights.

As a tribute to the unsung heroes of Bauhaus, La Prairie created its own ‘Women Bauhaus Collective’. The collective aims to put the female figures of the Bauhaus movement in the spotlight.

It shines the light on five young female talents from some of the world’s leading art and design schools including the ECAL in Switzerland, Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Central Saint Martins in London, the Design Institute in Hong Kong and The School of Design Institute in Chicago.

The five women have been tasked to interpret the theme ‘Pursuit of Harmony’ through a series of digital artworks that was presented via a virtual exhibition on laprairie.com. Each of the works reflect each woman’s personal responses to the theme across a vast range of media. The Pursuit of Harmony is a theme that was central to the Bauhaus movement.

The roster includes American textile artist Lauren Januhowski, Italian sculptor and photographer Jasmine Deporta, Hong Kong-based architecture/3d modelling artist Kristin Chan, Chinese American digital artist Gloria Fan Duan and British/Iranian visual artist Talia Golchin.

As part of their immersion into the school of Bauhaus, the artists visited the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation for a two-day experience which featured lectures and workshops, culminating in the creation of the artworks.

The artworks were presented at the La Prairie Lounge in Art Basel, Switzerland from 16-19 June.

Their projects were also featured in an exclusive virtual exhibition designed by Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis, who is also the mentor of the programme.

La Prairie has always celebrated every major launch with an artistic collaboration, extending its legacy beyond skincare and fortifying its connection with the art world. This latest project underlines its mission of offering women artists a platform to showcase their work.

MAGNIFY

Kristin Chan created a perspective-bending 3D architectural piece. She leveraged selected proportions and colours, which pay homage to Bauhaus, and bring them together in harmony. Following this theme, she balanced the scale, proportion and colour of segment to form a balanced piece that stays true to the spirit of Bauhaus.

WISHBONE

Gloria Fan Duan created a digital animated piece that takes inspiration from textile design during the Bauhaus period. Using computer technologies, the piece overlaps shared aesthetics and abstractions from Bauhaus. Infused with a zen aesthetic, which honours Fan Duan’s own heritage, the piece combines masculine shapes with feminine lines in a harmonious way.

COLONNADE OF CRAFT

Lauren Januhoswki created a fabric paravent that was inspired by the women weavers of the Bauhaus movement. The piece combines monotype printing and sewing techniques and ties to Januhowski’s own family connection with sewing.

The piece is a blend of inks, prints, fabric pieces, hand-cut letters and embroidery that come together to tell stories about the women in her life. Like a patchwork quilt, Januhowski’s piece challenges the societal norms and expectations that women face.

OUT OF THE BLUE

Jasmine Deporta created a surreal photographic sculpture that was inspired by the female form. The multi-dimensional piece combines performative gestures and everyday symbolism and took inspiration from the ‘Theory of harmony’ by Bauhaus artist Gertrud Grunow.

EUPHORIA

Talia Golchin created a dynamic digital sculpture that represents the harmony between the mind, body and universe. In her work, harmony is expressed as the flow of energy and movement, balanced with stillness and connectivity.

Euphoria is an abstraction of the female form, which is represented as interlocking circles and spheres. Key Bauhaus themes of simplicity in form and colour are present in her work.
