Ospree Duty Free launches drive to maximise spend
Ospree Duty Free has unveiled a campaign to encourage passengers to maximise the INR50,000 (US$563) duty-free shopping arrivals allowance at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Under customs regulations, the full INR50,000 duty-free limit is available, INR25,000 in Indian currency and INR25,000 via foreign currency or an international card.
However, the duty-free allowance is often underspent, with most passengers leaving the arrivals store after buying just two litres of liquor, Ospree Duty Free said.
To drive higher spending, Ospree Duty Free has revamped its store to guide travellers in building complete baskets within the INR50,000 duty-free limit.
The extensive arrivals selection includes perfumes and cosmetics for gifting, watches and fashion accessories from luxury labels, premium confectionery and seasonal travel-retail exclusives.
To encourage value-led purchases, the retailer is running exclusive arrivals promotions across its key product categories, with participating brands contributing to the offers.

Comment: Ensuring that inbound travellers are aware of their allowances and maximise what they are legally permitted to spend is not just an Indian challenge, but it is rendered more acute by the relative importance of arrivals duty free (over half of spend) in this vital market.
That’s why the Ospree Duty Free campaign to enable informed consumer choice and “reposition arrivals duty-free as a planned shopping moment rather than a last-minute liquor stop”– in the company’s words – carries added weight. Every retailer seeks to broaden the shopper audience, but encouraging incremental spend from those who already participate is just as important, and represents a more accessible opportunity to build basket sizes.
