Travel Retail Highlights IV
Salvo Grima Group makes a statement with Horizon brand
In April, Malta-based Salvo Grima Group and its Algerian partners inaugurated a 2,000sq m duty-free space at Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers under the newly launched ‘Horizon’ brand.
The partners were awarded the anchor retail concession at Algeria’s main gateway earlier this year after an open tender in 2024.
Gebr. Heinemann serves as key supply partner and supported the design and fit-out of the new retail space. The company has a longstanding relationship with Salvo Grima Group across other locations in North Africa.
The Horizon store offers a range of duty-free categories, including liquor, tobacco, beauty, fashion, confectionery and accessories. The walkthrough-format store is designed to enhance passenger flow and increase visibility across categories.
“We are excited to introduce a world-class retail experience that blends global brands with a local touch, offering travellers a premium and seamless duty-free shopping environment,” said Salvo Grima Group General Manager – International Business & Retail Dermon Gatt.
“Our partnership with Gebr. Heinemann, as well as our local partners’ in-depth knowledge of Algeria, strengthen our commitment to delivering excellence, and we look forward to contributing to Algeria’s growing tourism and aviation sector.”
Algiers International Airport served approximately 3.5 million international departing passengers in 2024 out of total traffic (including domestic) of around 10 million.

Comment: Horizon will now serve as the main umbrella branding for all Salvo Grima Group’s travel retail operations, its name symbolising the group’s geographical diversification strategy. Its launch sets the foundation for a unified brand identity across future locations.
In addition to the Algiers concession, Salvo Grima Group, in partnership with Algerian partners led by Mohamed Boulhouchat, will soon operate the duty-free concession at Oran Ahmed Ben Bella Airport in Algeria and supply existing concessions in Constantine (Mohamed Boudiaf International) and Sétif International airports.
Salvo Grima has also been awarded the ferry terminal duty-free concession at the Port of La Goulette in Tunis, Tunisia. All these operations are set to begin in 2025, extending the group footprint to exciting new locations.
