Lagardère Travel Retail opens world’s largest airport LEGO at DXB

Our countdown kicks off with something spectacular from Lagardère Travel Retail and LEGO, as they combined to open the world’s largest LEGO airport store at Dubai International (DXB) in January (see also Images of the Year).

The 190sq m Terminal 3 store was constructed to resemble giant LEGO bricks and features interactive zones designed to stimulate creativity and engagement.

Victoria’s Secret and The Shilla Duty Free store at Singapore Changi Airport

American premium lingerie, fashion and beauty house Victoria’s Secret unveiled a standalone boutique at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 1 in November, in partnership with The Shilla Duty Free. The circular boutique was the first in Asia Pacific travel retail to offer both the brand’s beauty and lingerie lines.

Dior Beauty Incheon Airport Plan de Paris pop-up

In September, LVMH-owned luxury and beauty house Dior launched its inaugural ‘Plan de Paris’ pop-up in Asia Pacific travel retail in partnership with Shinsegae Duty Free at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2.

The activation brought Parisian allure to Korea with interactive fashion and beauty experiences.

Mondelēz World Travel Retail’s Jaya Singh retirement announcement

The news in April that the popular Mondelēz World Travel Retail Managing Director Jaya Singh was to retire at the end of January 2025 drew many tributes, notably from us.

“Travel retail without Jaya Singh will seem like an Oreo without its filling. For such has been his quiet influence within the channel that he will leave a giant-sized gap upon his departure,” wrote Martin Moodie.

Singh is widely regarded as one of the channel’s most-respected, forward-thinking and influential figures. He has served with immense distinction for more than 30 years at Mondelēz International in several global leadership positions spanning both domestic and travel retail markets.

Hennessy campaign at Changi Airport marks the Year of the Dragon

In January, Moët Hennessy Travel Retail unveiled a Lunar New Year activation for Maison Hennessy in partnership with Changi Airport Group and Lotte Duty Free.

The 70sq m sensory experience at Terminal 1 Departures was the largest Hennessy pop-up in travel retail for the festive season. A white dragon, symbolising joy, luck and prosperity, caught the eye at the retail space entrances, serving as the focal point for the experience.

Abu Dhabi Airports appoints Elena Sorlini as Managing Director and CEO

Abu Dhabi Airports, the operator of five commercial airports in the emirate, announced the appointment of Elena Sorlini as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in February. She transitioned into the role permanently after serving in an interim capacity since June 2023, overseeing the successful opening of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s new state-of-the-art Terminal A, at what is now named Zayed International Airport.

Beste Ermaner succeeds Edvinas Katilius PMI Duty Free Vice President

In March, Philip Morris International (PMI) Duty Free Vice President announced Edvinas Katilius was leaving his post to take up a new role as PMI Vice President Global Business Solutions. Beste Ermaner stepped up to take the senior travel retail position. Ermaner has been with PMI for 23 years, working across consumer insights, marketing, sales, global brand building innovation and reduced risk products.

Sustainable beauty and wellness company L’OCCITANE Group appointed the highly regarded Evelyne Ly-Wainer as Managing Director, Global Travel Retail in May. Before joining the company, she spent nearly eight years as Chief Commercial Officer for Shiseido Travel Retail Asia Pacific.

Jesús Abias takes on L’Oréal Travel Retail Asia Pacific leadership

Jesús Abia was named Managing Director of L’Oréal Travel Retail Asia Pacific from July, succeeding Tao Zhang. Abia, who has worked with L’Oréal Groupe for 14 years, switched from his role as General Manager Europe for the Luxe couture brands Prada, Mugler, Valentino and Viktor&Rolf.

In Memoriam: Colm McLoughlin, travel retail pioneer, industry statesman and great man of Ireland

With profound sorrow at the end of October, our post and related story reported the passing of Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free’s long-time Executive Vice Chairman and CEO at age 81. Colm had retired on 31 May after precisely 55 years in the travel retail sector. Dozens of tributes poured into this post’s comments section to salute one of travel retail’s greatest statesmen.
