Opening a ‘new chapter of internationalisation’ in Sri Lankan duty free
China Duty Free Group (CDFG) this week officially opened the cdf Sri Lanka Duty Free store in The Mall at Port City Colombo. The flagship economic development project, jointly developed by China and Sri Lanka, is home to the travel retailer’s first foray into the South Asian market.
The 2,000sq m store features a diverse range of high-end products covering over 400 internationally renowned brands, including fashion and accessories, luxury watches and jewellery, beauty products, perfumes, fine wines, global speciality foods and souvenirs.
The shop features a special ‘Duty Free Liquor’ section with over 300 brands across single malt whiskies, premium Cognacs, wines and Chinese spirits.
CDFG said the store’s elegant interior design creates a comfortable shopping environment. Multilingual staff have been appointed to enhance the customer experience.

Both local residents and international travellers can shop with travel records and enjoy a variety of payment options.
Comment: Port City Colombo is an ambitious Special Economic Zone developed through Private-Public Partnership and seen as a driver of Sri Lanka’s economic growth. The vision is to create a world-class standard for investments, services and lifestyle, with duty free stores from CDFG and separately, One World Duty Free, among the signature projects.
As CDFG notes: “This development sets the stage for a significant boost in local tourism. The store inauguration is anticipated to transform Port City Colombo into a thriving hub for business and tourism, catalysing greater economic development and opening new opportunities in Sri Lanka, while further enhancing the strategic collaboration between the two nations [Sri Lanka and China].”
Crucially the move also opens a new territory for the Chinese travel retailer, building on a footprint that spans airport, cruise and downtown duty-free operations from China to Singapore to Cambodia, and now South Asia.
