The World’s Top Travel Retailers
Preview – The world’s top travel retailers
As we prepare to publish our full report on the leading travel retailers worldwide measured by their 2023 turnover, we present preliminary details of the top five in our rankings.
In these pages we preview one of our best-read features of the year, our Top Travel Retailers Report, which appears in full in our forthcoming Magazine edition for July/August.
We present the top five ranked by their 2023 retail sales, which this year sees a change at the top, as a resurgent Avolta (formerly Dufry) takes back the number one position it held from 2014 until 2019. [Note: Our full report also includes a separate airport food & beverage ranking.]
Building Avolta’s presence in China: Hudson opened four stores at Shanghai Pudong International Airport this year, offering a blend of travel essentials and F&B
The figures also underline the powerhouse status of China Duty Free Group (CDFG), even in a year in which it relinquishes the leading ranking. In the past 15 years, CDFG has undergone an extraordinary transformation, aided by Chinese outbound travel and the explosive growth in the Hainan offshore duty-free market. The company ranked 19th in our Top Travel Retailers list in 2010, was 12th in 2015 and fourth in 2019, before taking on the mantle of leadership – and representing a beacon of hope for the global industry – through the COVID-19 period.
Lagardère Travel Retail climbs to number three after a year of expansion while Korean heavyweight Lotte Duty Free is fourth and DFS Group fifth as these companies cement their placings towards the top of our list.
Full rankings appear shortly in our Magazine edition, out shortly.
