Brisbane Airport launches innovative dining concepts and seeks further F&B partners

Welcome to this new, regular section in The Moodie Davitt eZine dedicated to the all-important food & beverage channel. We round up some of the most eye-catching recent openings, campaigns and events in travel dining, beginning with an exciting first from Brisbane Airport.

“A multi-faceted sports and entertainment precinct unlike anything seen before in Queensland.”

That’s the pledge from Brisbane Airport as it unveiled a partnership with the Green Beacon Brewing Company and Golf Central for a “one-of-a-kind entertainment destination” named Landers Pocket.

Brisbane Airport said the precinct will offer a unique consumer experience for thousands of visitors and travellers each week.

“Brisbane Airport is thrilled to welcome this exciting development. It promises to provide travellers with a unique and memorable destination at BNE, while also becoming a landmark venue for Brisbane residents,” said Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Martin Ryan.

“In 2025, this will be the newest venue for Brisbane to experience, injecting jobs and vibrancy into the Skygate precinct of the airport.

“The naming of Landers Pocket is a nice nod to history and the market garden that occupied part of the airport site a century ago.”

Green Beacon will run the brewery and distillery, which will complement an 800-person capacity hospitality offering operated by Golf Central.

“This exciting development promises to provide travellers with a unique and memorable destination at Brisbane Airport, while also becoming a landmark venue for Brisbane residents,” says Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Martin Ryan

The existing state-of-the-art golf driving range will double in size and include ball tracking in every bay.

The development will feature a second mini golf course, padel tennis courts, multiple function and event spaces, a beer garden, and an outdoor amphitheatre.

The partnership agreement with Golf Central, established in Brisbane in 2013, will create a brand experience that solidifies Green Beacon as one of the top craft beers in the Sunshine State and Golf Central as one of the premier golf entertainment facilities in the country, Brisbane Airport said.

Comment: This initiative is one of several announced or opened recently that will enhance the dining experience and form part of the ongoing transformation of Queensland’s premier gateway.

In March SSP revealed Local, a 360-degree restaurant and bar in the Domestic Terminal showcasing the state’s renowned producers, distillers and brewers.

In July, SSP-owned Airport Retail Enterprises will open an innovative new dining concept, The Independent, in the Domestic Terminal. The high-class eatery will feature menus from a revolving roster of nationally acclaimed Australian chefs and emerging local talents.

As it looks further ahead, the airport company has just released a wide-ranging Request for Proposals (RFP), inviting top-tier food & beverage providers and retailers to bid for over 32 premier opportunities within the International Terminal.

Food & beverage opportunities include a new contemporary high-end bar concept, an additional lobby bar opportunity, quick-service restaurants, grab & go kiosk and an all-day café, all located on Level 3 departures.

The airport reimagined: “Our aim is to bring the finest global offerings to Brisbane while showcasing the best of Queensland to the world,” says Brisbane Airport

The “jewel in the crown”, is the over 900sq m food & beverage precinct, a first of its kind in an Australian airport. This will provide an immersive experience that will be a platform for food theatre, Brisbane Airport said.

The successful operator will cover all aspects of food retailing, including bar service, exceptional coffee, multiple ‘surprise and delight’ culinary experiences and rotating seasonal cuisines.

And there is more. Two more quick-service restaurants, an Espresso bar and a café/bar will be sited on Level 4, along with a new arrivals café and Espresso kiosk on Level 2.

The RFP timing is opportune: the International Terminal is experiencing its strongest performance ever with passenger spend rates outperforming pre-COVID numbers following a recent flurry of new route launches and announcements.
